Open Source CMS
In order to make web development and maintenance easier, there are several Open Source content management systems (CMS) available today. Instead of building websites with static HTML pages, a CMS makes use of dynamic pages with tools such as PHP or ASP. Without getting too technical, this way of working allows to store information to be displayed in a web-based database. When you open a dynamic page, this information is pulled from the database.
One of the advantages is that the way the information is presented (displayed) and the underlying structure are seperated, which makes it easier to manage the content on the site.
Why does this matter? First, developing a website has become easier because there are frameworks available to use. Second, having a website that looks professional and has advanced features is within reach of almost any organization. You have to be in control over the content and not rely totally on a web developper to do updates. This is part of Web 2.0 and it can really change the way you use the web in your business
